What Procedures Does Our General Surgery Department Offer?

We provide a full spectrum of surgical services using laparoscopic and endoscopic technology.

Robotic Surgery

Robotic-assisted surgery is an advanced form of minimally invasive surgery in which the surgeon controls the robotic system throughout the operation.

The technology provides a magnified three-dimensional view of the surgical field together with highly precise instrument movement, which can be particularly useful during complex procedures or when operating within confined anatomical spaces.

At FUH, robotic-assisted techniques may be considered for selected:

  • Colorectal procedures
  • Abdominal wall and hernia repairs
  • Hepatobiliary surgery
  • General surgical oncology procedures
  • Bariatric procedures
  • Other complex general surgical conditions

Robotic surgery is not necessary or appropriate for every operation. The choice between robotic, laparoscopic and open surgery is based on the patient's diagnosis, previous surgery, anatomy, overall health and complexity of the planned procedure.

Laparoscopic Surgery
‍

Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery, also known as keyhole surgery, allows many abdominal operations to be performed through several small incisions rather than one large incision.

A camera provides a detailed view of the abdominal cavity while specialized instruments allow the surgeon to perform the operation. Depending on the condition and clinical circumstances, laparoscopic surgery may offer:

  • Smaller incisions and scars
  • Reduced postoperative discomfort
  • Earlier mobilisation
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Faster return to normal activities

Our surgeons perform a broad range of laparoscopic procedures, including surgery for gallbladder disease, colorectal conditions, hernias, gastro-esophageal reflux and hiatal hernia, bariatric surgery and selected hepatobiliary and oncological conditions. The most appropriate surgical approach is discussed individually with each patient.

Colorectal Surgery

We provide surgical care for benign and malignant conditions affecting the colon, rectum and anus.

Our colorectal services include:

  • Hemorrhoids and anal fissures, including laser and radiofrequency techniques where appropriate
  • Anal fistulae – VAAFT (Video-Assisted Anal Fistula Treatment)
  • Pilonidal sinus – EPSiT
  • Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis requiring surgical management
  • Colorectal cancer – laparoscopic and robotic resection
  • Pouch surgery for ulcerative colitis
  • Diverticular disease
  • Stoma formation and management where required
  • Selected functional bowel disorders

Treatment is individualized according to the nature and severity of the condition. Patients with colorectal cancer are managed through a multidisciplinary approach involving surgery, oncology, radiology, pathology and other relevant specialties.

Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery

Our surgeons provide assessment and surgical management of benign and malignant conditions affecting the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts and pancreas.

Services include:

  • Gallbladder surgery for gallstones and related conditions
  • Management of complicated gallbladder disease
  • Surgery for bile duct disorders and tumors
  • Liver surgery for benign and malignant tumors and cysts
  • Surgery for pancreatic tumors and cysts
  • Surgical management of chronic pancreatitis
  • Pancreatic resections
  • Whipple procedure (pancreaticoduodenectomy)
  • Distal pancreatectomy
  • Complex hepatobiliary and pancreatic cancer surgery

Depending on the diagnosis, procedures may be performed using open, laparoscopic or robotic-assisted techniques. Complex cancer cases are planned through multidisciplinary discussion with relevant specialists

Gastro-Esophageal Reflux and Hiatal Hernia Surgery

Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when stomach contents repeatedly flow back into the esophagus, causing symptoms such as heartburn and regurgitation.

A hiatal hernia occurs when part of the stomach moves through the opening in the diaphragm into the chest. Hiatal hernias can be associated with significant reflux symptoms and, in some patients, other complications.

Most patients with reflux disease do not require surgery. However, surgical treatment may be considered for selected patients with persistent symptoms, significant hiatal hernia or other indications despite appropriate medical management.

Our surgical services include:

  • Assessment of patients with persistent or complicated gastro-esophageal reflux
  • Surgical management of hiatal hernia
  • Surgical management of larger or complex paraesophageal hernias
  • Anti-reflux surgery in appropriately selected patients
  • Laparoscopic repair where clinically appropriate
  • Management of recurrent or complex hiatal hernias

Treatment is coordinated with gastroenterology and other relevant specialties when required, and surgery is recommended only after appropriate evaluation.

Abdominal Wall and Hernia Surgery

FUH provides treatment for straightforward and complex hernias of the abdominal wall and groin.

Conditions treated include:

  • Inguinal hernia
  • Femoral hernia
  • Umbilical hernia
  • Epigastric hernia
  • Incisional hernia
  • Recurrent hernia
  • Multiple or complex abdominal wall hernias
    • Treatment options include:
    • Open hernia repair
    • Laparoscopic hernia repair
    • Robotic-assisted hernia repair
    • Mesh-based repair where clinically indicated

Abdominal wall reconstruction for selected complex hernias

The surgical approach depends on the size and location of the hernia, previous operations, patient factors and whether the hernia is primary, recurrent or complex.

Breast Surgery

Our General Surgery and Breast Surgery teams provide comprehensive surgical care for both benign and malignant breast conditions.

Services include:

  • Assessment and surgical treatment of breast lumps
  • Excision of benign breast lesions
  • Breast-conserving cancer surgery
  • Lumpectomy
  • Mastectomy
  • Management of axillary disease
  • Oncoplastic breast surgery
  • Immediate breast reconstruction in appropriately selected patients
  • Surgery for recurrent or complex breast disease

Breast cancer treatment is planned through a multidisciplinary approach involving breast surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, medical oncologists and other specialists.

Where appropriate, oncoplastic surgical techniques combine cancer surgery with reconstructive principles to achieve both oncological and cosmetic objectives.

Thyroid and Endocrine Surgery

Our surgeons provide surgical treatment for thyroid and selected endocrine conditions.

Conditions managed include:

  • Thyroid nodules
  • Multinodular goiter
  • Enlarged or symptomatic thyroid glands
  • Hyperthyroidism requiring surgery
  • Thyroid cancer
  • Thyroid cysts and masses
  • Selected parathyroid conditions
  • Selected adrenal tumors and endocrine surgical conditions

Thyroid procedures include:

  • Thyroid lobectomy
  • Total thyroidectomy
  • Surgery for benign and malignant thyroid disease

Treatment planning is based on clinical assessment, imaging, laboratory investigations and, where required, needle biopsy and multidisciplinary discussion. Careful attention is given to protecting the structures surrounding the thyroid gland, including the nerves controlling the vocal cords and the parathyroid glands.

Surgical Oncology

Surgical oncology is an important part of the General Surgery service at FUH.

Our surgeons provide operative management of selected benign, pre-malignant and malignant tumors involving:

  • Colon and rectum
  • Stomach and gastrointestinal tract
  • Liver
  • Gallbladder and bile ducts
  • Pancreas
  • Breast
  • Thyroid and endocrine organs
  • Skin and soft tissue
  • Selected sarcomas and other complex tumors

Cancer surgery may involve removal of the primary tumor together with appropriate surrounding tissue and lymph nodes where clinically indicated.

Depending on the type and location of the cancer, surgery may be performed using open, laparoscopic or robotic-assisted techniques.

Multidisciplinary Cancer Care

Cancer treatment rarely involves surgery alone.

Complex cancer cases are discussed through multidisciplinary tumor board meetings involving appropriate specialists such as:

  • Surgical oncologists
  • Medical oncologists
  • Radiologists
  • Pathologists
  • Gastroenterologists
  • Other organ-specific specialists

This approach allows surgery to be coordinated with chemotherapy and other treatments when required and ensures that the overall treatment sequence is planned for the individual patient.

Bariatric and Weight-Loss Surgery

FUH provides multidisciplinary assessment and surgical treatment for patients living with obesity when surgery is clinically appropriate.

Bariatric surgery is not simply a procedure to reduce weight. It forms part of a long-term treatment program designed to support sustainable weight reduction and improve obesity-related health conditions.

Our surgical weight-loss procedures include:

  • Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy
  • Laparoscopic gastric bypass

Selected robotic-assisted bariatric surgery where appropriate

Patients undergo comprehensive assessment before surgery, and the choice of operation is individualized according to factors including BMI, eating patterns, medical conditions, previous abdominal surgery and long-term treatment goals.

Multidisciplinary Weight Management

Bariatric patients are supported by a multidisciplinary team that may include:

  • Bariatric surgeons
  • Physicians
  • Dietitians
  • Psychologists or psychiatrists
  • Physiotherapists
  • Other specialists depending on associated medical conditions

Nutritional monitoring and long-term follow-up remain important after bariatric surgery to support weight loss, maintain adequate nutrition and identify potential complications.

Emergency and Trauma Surgery

Our General Surgery team works closely with FUH's 24/7 Emergency Department to provide rapid assessment and surgical management of acute surgical conditions and traumatic injuries.

  • Emergency and trauma surgical care may include:
  • Acute appendicitis
  • Acute gallbladder disease
  • Intestinal obstruction
  • Gastrointestinal perforation
  • Abdominal infection and sepsis
  • Complicated or strangulated hernias
  • Acute anorectal conditions
  • Blunt and penetrating abdominal trauma
  • Traumatic injuries involving the abdominal organs
  • Emergency surgery for internal bleeding
  • Soft-tissue and complex wound injuries
  • Other causes of an acute surgical abdomen requiring urgent intervention

Patients with significant trauma are assessed and managed through a multidisciplinary approach involving General Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Critical Care, Radiology, Orthopaedics and other specialties as required.

FUH provides access to advanced diagnostic imaging, laboratory services, operating theatres, interventional radiology, blood bank support and intensive care, allowing rapid escalation of treatment when emergency surgery or critical care is required.
