Yana's Journey: From Agonizing Pain to Hope

Determined to find a path to healing and happiness, Yana is finally free from the pain and despair she had been grappling with for years. Yana suffered from excruciating knee pain that held her from living the life she dreamt of.

For the past few years, Yana experienced intense pain in her right knee, making the simplest tasks unbearable. Day-to-Day tasks like climbing stairs or bending her knee became impossible feats. This was particularly devastating for Yana because she yearned to be a mother who could actively engage and play with her child.

With time, her knee condition worsened, leading to swollen joints and a displaced right knee causing immense pain. These physical limitations led her to miss out on the precious moments of her son’s childhood.

Determined to find a solution and regain a pain free life, Yana sought help at Fakeeh University Hospital. She met with Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Khaled Alawany, to gain a better understanding of her pain & immobility. Recognizing the severity of her situation, Dr. Khaled Alawany advised detailed clinical examinations to identify the underlying cause of her pain.

“Yana’s pain stemmed from severe kneecap instability and degeneration – a condition where the kneecap shifts, most often because of a previous injury.  As we use our knees extensively, throughout the day; anyone can develop this condition. Some women are more susceptible to developing the condition because of loose ligaments. In Yana’s case, there is no definitive cause, however two previous unsuccessful knee surgeries could have exacerbated it,” said Dr. Khaled Alawany, Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon at Fakeeh University Hospital.

The greatest gift that the surgery bestowed upon Yana was the ability to play with her child. “I am a happier person now. I was tired of being in constant pain and I am living my best life now. Things are different now, unlike before when I was a spectator, only able to watch my son play.  My experience at Fakeeh University Hospital has been exceptional. The Doctors, nurses, physiotherapists are incredibly knowledgeable, and supportive. There were moments when I was discouraged by my progress, but the unwavering support I received made it much easier,”

After thorough evaluation of Yana’s condition, Dr. Khaled Alawany recommended a partial knee replacement surgery. With hope rekindled, Yana embarked on a journey towards recovery. The surgery aimed to correct the general instability in her kneecap, offering her a chance at a pain-free life. After successful surgery, she was soon on her road to recovery.

Yana adhered to a strict regimen of pain management and physiotherapy, determined to regain strength in her knees. Gradually, the pain subsided, and her knee regained mobility. With each passing day, she walked more comfortably and engaged in moderate outdoor activities.

What is Knee Instability?

The knee is a complex joint that is stabilized by several ligaments. Knee instability can be described as a sensation of the knee twisting or moving sideways during physical activities including walking. The condition causes a wide-ranging impact on mobility leading to persistent pain and inability to move/straighten the knee. Overweight individuals, those with previous knee issues and women in general pose a higher risk of developing the condition. It’s also a common occurrence among individuals actively involved in sports.

With no definitive cause the condition could be attributed to factors like ligament tear, severe knee injuries, osteoarthritis, or unknown reasons. The symptoms often depend on the underlying cause of the condition. Rest and simple home care may help improve the condition in some cases, while others may require physical therapy or surgery.

Whether you are susceptible to the condition or not, it is crucial to seek expert opinion from an Orthopedic/sports medicine specialist upon experiencing prolonged discomfort or pain. Symptoms vary from case to case, while some may experience soreness or pain, others may experience swelling and discomfort. Early diagnosis and treatment of the condition can enhance an individual’s quality of life.
