Pre-Operative Instructions

  1. DO NOT use a razor to shave the surgical site prior to surgery.
  2. Notify your surgeon if you develop a cold, sore throat, fever, or any other illness within 48 hours prior to your surgery date.
  3. Inform the doctor if you are taking any regular medications (blood thinners, vitamins, anti-hypertensive, or diabetic medications, etc.)
  4. Avoid having colored nail polish/nail extensions on the day of surgery.
  5. Do not smoke or drink alcoholic beverages 24 hours prior to your surgery.
  6. To reduce the risk of any infection after surgery, shower the night before and on the day of surgery using the chlorhexidine bath kit provided, avoiding the face, sensitive body parts and any open wounds.
  7. Do not eat or drink anything at least 8 hours before your surgery or as advised by your anesthesiologist, as doing so may lead to cancellation of your surgery.
  8. If advised by your doctor, you may take your medications with small sips of water.

Post-operative care

  1. Always keep your hands clean and maintain good personal hygiene.
  2. Take your medications as prescribed by your physician, following correct dose and schedule.
  3. Keep dressings dry and intact for 48 hours post-surgery. Avoid exposing the wound during this time.
  4. Monitor for signs of increased redness, tenderness, swelling, pus / drainage from the incision site, or fever 38°C, and seek medical attention in Emergency department.
  5. Get good nutrition. Healthy eating helps your body heal. If you follow a specific diet before surgery, ask your clinician if you should stay on the same diet.
  6. Avoid drinking any alcoholic beverage and smoking. This can thin your blood, increase post-operative bleeding and risk of infection.
