Mental Health Awareness Event

Fakeeh University Hospital, Dubai Silicon Oasis & Maharat Learning Centre join hands to spread Mental Health Awareness in the UAE, on World Mental Health Day, 2022

On account of World Mental Health Day, on 10th of October 2022, Fakeeh University Hospital, Dubai Silicon Oasis in collaboration with Maharat Learning Center organized an interactive forum on holistic approaches to mental health in children and young adults. Experts from Fakeeh University Hospital Dr. Bariah Dardari, Consultant Pediatrician, Dr. Tommaso Tufo, Consultant Neurosurgeon, and Dr Hibah Shata CEO and Founder of Maharat Learning Center and Ms Nicola Orielly the Medical Director were part of this panel discussion. The partnership comes in place to put joint efforts towards promoting mental health education and awareness. The interactive forum covered topics such as psychotherapy, drug therapy, biomedical interventions, early intervention, behavioural science, psychological evaluations, and marital counselling in children & young adults.

As per collective studies, there is a growing concern about mental health in kids and young adults in the UAE. Studies done in 2020 by researchers from Harvard Medical School and the UAE University indicate that between 17% and 22% of adolescents (aged 12 to 18 years) in the UAE suffer from depressive symptoms. In children with chronic illness, the prevalence of symptoms of anxiety and depression was up to 33%.  Mental health challenges can range from learning disorders to psychiatric disorders. However, with increasing awareness among parents and educators regarding the importance of mental health, these challenges can be easily mitigated.

On this World Mental Health Day, WHO has urged everyone to “Make mental health & well-being for all a global priority.” We strongly believe that Mental Health matters the most, especially when it comes to children is one of our key commitments for changing Dubai’s healthcare landscape. With joint efforts towards promoting breast health education and breast cancer prevention, Fakeeh University Hospital commits to bring a positive change in the health statistics of Dubai’s mental health scenario.
