Spinal Fracture Treatment in Dubai

Spinal Fracture Treatment in Dubai: Expert Care for Vertebral Injuries

A spinal fracture is a serious medical condition that requires prompt evaluation to prevent long-term complications, including nerve damage and spinal deformity. Whether caused by trauma, osteoporosis, or tumors, early diagnosis and expert treatment are essential.

At Fakeeh University Hospital in Dubai, our Spine Center specializes in minimally invasive kyphoplasty, spinal stabilization, and advanced vertebral fracture management, helping patients achieve rapid pain relief and faster recovery, often without major open surgery.

If you are experiencing severe back pain after a fall or injury, immediate medical assessment is critical.

What Is a Spinal Fracture?

A spinal fracture, often referred to as a vertebral fracture, occurs when one or more bones in the spine break or collapse. This is not simply a “broken back”  it affects the body’s central support system and may compromise spinal stability or nerve function.

Spinal fractures can range from mild compression fractures to severe instability requiring surgical correction.

Understanding Spinal Fractures: Causes & Risks

Our surgeons categorize fractures by their cause to determine the most effective treatment path:

  • Osteoporotic Compression Fractures: Common in elderly patients, where weakened vertebrae collapse under minor stress.
  • Traumatic Fractures: Resulting from high-impact accidents or falls.
  • Pathological Fractures: Caused by spinal tumors that weaken the bone structure.

Understanding Spinal Fractures Causes & Risks

Do You Have a Spinal Fracture? (Common Symptoms)

If you experience any of the following after a fall or sudden movement, seek an orthopedic evaluation immediately:

  • Acute Back Pain: Often described as a sharp, stabbing sensation that worsens when standing or walking.
  • Height Loss or Kyphosis: A visible "hunch" in the back, often seen in osteoporotic patients.
  • Neurological Red Flags: Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the legs, or loss of bladder/bowel control (this indicates a potential spinal cord emergency).

Diagnosis & Precision Imaging

At FUH, we use high-definition imaging to create a 3D map of the fracture before recommending surgery.

  • Digital X-ray: For initial bone alignment check.
  • CT Scan: To view the bone's structural integrity in detail.
  • MRI (Gold Standard): Essential for checking if the fracture is "fresh" (edema) and evaluating nerve root compression.

Treatment Options

Treatment for spinal fractures depends on several factors, including the type of fracture, severity of symptoms, and overall health of the patient.

  1. Conservative Management: For many patients, conservative treatment is effective. This may include:
    • Pain Management: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or opioids may be prescribed.
    • Bracing: A back brace may be used to provide support and limit movement during the healing process.
  2. Surgical Intervention: If conservative treatment fails to alleviate pain or if there is significant deformity or neurological compromise, surgical options may be considered, including:
    • Kyphoplasty: A minimally invasive procedure that involves injecting cement into the fractured vertebra to restore its height and stability.
    • Spinal Instrumentation: In more severe cases, the use of rods and screws to stabilize the spine may be necessary.
    • Fortunately, these procedures can often be performed using a minimally invasive approach.

The patient had fractures of thoracic T12 and Lumbar L1, he was treated with Vertebroplasty in other hospital developed 90° Kyphosis with stenosis and lost the ability to stand and sit. We addressed it minimally invasively through microscopic transthoracic vertebral body replacement of T12 & L1 in combination with minimal invasive percutaneous instrumentation. He was able to ambulate again without any helping aids and restored his ability to sit and stand straight once again.

FAQs

How do I know if my back pain is a fracture?
Scroll Down

Unlike a typical muscle strain, a spinal fracture causes localized, intense pain that often makes it impossible to stand straight. If you have osteoporosis or have had a recent fall, any sudden back pain should be treated as a potential fracture until cleared by an MRI or CT scan.

Is Kyphoplasty safe for elderly patients?
Scroll Down

Yes. Kyphoplasty is specifically designed for elderly patients because it is performed through a tiny incision under local or light general anesthesia. It significantly reduces the risks associated with long-term bed rest, such as pneumonia or blood clots.

How soon can I walk after spinal fracture surgery?
Scroll Down

Most patients are encouraged to stand and walk within 24 hours (the same day or day after) of spinal fracture surgery to prevent blood clots and reduce stiffness, usually with assistance from a nurse or therapist. Early, short, and supported walks are key, with gradual increases in distance over the first 2-6 weeks.
